Lacy's Health

We've been on a journey. I think it’s best to get a general update posted to ease things for Lacy and for her safety. Early last spring, Lacy had some health issues that took a massive turn for the worse. I wish I could tell you after 8 months, we knew all that is going on, but at this point the Lord has not revealed all the pieces to the puzzle. Our journey began with in depth eye exams, to an MRI looking for a brain tumor (praise Jesus that was clear), blood and stool testing, to our current unknown internal gut issue. What we do know is that Lacy has both genes for celiac disease (auto immune disease that cannot digest gluten-which is in just about EVERYTHING), a long list of food allergies and sensitivities, difficulty processing fats, a Candida overgrowth, and leaky gut syndrome. With the potential and very probable celiac, a COMPLETE overall of the home, kitchen and food took place. New kitchen pots and utensils, and a huge purge of almost everything we used, and had to learn an entire new way to prepare food.  So, about 5 months into a food and diet overall, Lacy is still not doing well.

We are doing all we can to eliminate risks of exposure to painful and debilitating allergens…but we aren’t certain what the triggers are or if some problems are without triggers. What we are doing is cooking GFCF, grain-free whole foods from scratch and from our safe kitchen/GF home, not eating out at all and continuing testing. It’s difficult, because symptoms flare up and go away. The time needed to meet these demands has left me in the kitchen many, many hours.

So, this is why I’ve been so busy. With celiac genes being, well genetic…I am FLOORED at connections to health issues I have dealt with since my teen years, and feel that I need to follow the same path as Lacy. Problems I have been dealing with for almost 2 decades have gone away! Also, if Ashley is a gene carrier, this diet could keep future problems at bay for her, if she is not ingesting foods that are slowing damaging her system. Even if not, the food we are eating is top quality and good for anyone’s overall health. We are doing this as a family. It is good for us and just makes things a lot simpler at home and when we leave the home.

All this to say, we rest knowing Jesus is in control. He knows the cause and in His perfect Sovereignty, is over all of this. And we rejoice that from His fullness we have received grace upon grace to meet every challenge and every pain. We keep our hearts and thoughts focused on what we can eat and do, and see His blessings in ALL areas. Even when we solve this, diagnosis or a health regime, will not bring complete healing, that is something that only Jesus can bring as Lord and Savior. We are grateful for all the opportunities within this for Lacy, and her family, to see and experience THE truth and grow closer to Jesus. That, is one good that comes through the trials we face. We do, however, need prayer to remain steadfast, the strength and finances to meet the food demands, and wisdom for future medical decisions since we are working with different doctors and opinions, and just every day choices in balancing this and living out our lives for Jesus.

Lacy about to start her MRI. Lacy holding her stuffed teddy, Jesus holding them both.

All ready for the MRI!

Such a blessing this therapy dog was visiting the hospital when we finished the MRI, which was extremely difficult due to an unexpected IV contrast.

Jesus is faithful and Lacy is smiling after the difficult day, showing daddy her IV bandage.

More testing begins. Needles are the hardest for Lacy, but what growth the Lord provided through this.

She calms down and begins talking and observing the blood draw.

Passed out after a long and very painful night.

Goofing around with fully dilated eyes for the first time.

Sporting the cool shades from the Optometrist.

Dr. Chown is FANTASTIC. If local...check her out.

Too weak to sit while waiting for our appointment at TrueMed in Hood River.

Our last night of our Montana trip in August, after graciously asking the manger of a restaurant about a suspicious dish, they confessed to cross-contaminating Lacy's food and Lacy ingested gluten after being GF for about a month. It was extremely painful and terrifying. The worst of it lasted for almost 2 weeks of relentless pain. Since in the past I have had difficultly getting medical help unless I provided a video, I took this short clip during the night after this gluten exposure.'s hard to watch. Case and point why we are so careful to avoid gluten. This literally would go on for 3-4 hours without any reprieve, she would crash and suddenly wake in full pain again for another round.

Mystery Solved :(

"As for God, His way is perfect. His Word has been tested, and He is a shield to all who trust in Him." 2 Samuel 22:31

August 12, I thought Ashley was coming down with a cold. A few days later she was struggling to breath. Our doctor was on vacation, so we saw another doctor in the practice. He told us, she might stop breathing and even pass out, all normal. Although, cough medicine is not recommended anyone, we(doctors) now have hands tied and can't do anything, so I would still say give her(a tiny 3 yr old who is not even recommended on the over the counter bottle to take) to have a 1/2 dose. If she passes out, don't worry, carry on. This was shocking to me, but I am in no way a medical expert, so I took his word.

Two nights later, Ashley started coughing, stopped breathing went from red, to purple, and collapsed in my arms. I screamed for Eddy to call 911 and when he was running, she GASPED for air. She was then not totally responsive and eyes were rolling and head bobbing. We called my doctor(still on vaca) and the doctor on call was the same one we saw 2 days before. This was near 1am and we did wake the doctor up(evident) and his response was "Hmm...I have never heard of those symptoms before."(as if I was exaggerating or not telling the truth) "All I can say is up her dose of cough medicine"(THAT IS DEEMED NOT SAFE) I said, so you are telling me, her symptoms right now are not indicating a need for a medical evaluation? "Kids often don't breath at times during coughing spells" But, I asked again, about her eyes rolling, head bobbing, and non-responsive/lethargic symptoms were OK?????

According to him, it was.

The rest of the night was not ok. I prayed that the Lord would provide the right doctor, refusing to do see this doctor again. Monday morning, after many friends recommendations I took Ashley(and Lacy who was showing signs of coming down with the same thing) to Dr. Richard Martin who seemed to let the world stop, while he thoroughly and compassionately listened and examined the my girls. A new plan of action was started...although, waiting was still a part of that plan. This time, however, other courses of action were being taken to attempt to minimize coughing.

I knew we were now in good hands and, praise be to God, that prayer was answered.

Somewhere in the middle, Eddy needed to go to San Francisco and we were SOOOOO thankful my mom was able to come and help battle this with us. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Thankful.

Things were not getting better, so to avoid communication errors in describing the symptoms and coughing episodes, I attempted to video Ashley. I never caught an intense episode, but this still gives a glimpse of what we were dealing with. Immediately after, we were asked to come in and I then posted this video on FB, in part to let ALL who were loving, praying, helping us get through this ordeal, just what we were dealing with. We know the Lord is so good and gracious and SO faithful. Never abondoning us and graciously providing what we need to weather the storm. Whatever the results. So grateful it looks like this storm will be clearing to sunny skies. EITHER OUTCOME, we are thankful the Lord is with us.

A few more doctor visits, which including popping ribs back into place after being dislocated from intense coughing(Lacy sadly has a bigger problem with that), chest x-rays at the hospital, unsuccessful nebulizer treatments, FINALLY after 2 weeks, every night including horrific coughing, puking, non-breathing episodes, we were given the confirmation.

Pertussis. Aka...whooping cough.

The overflowing love and support, along with Dr. Martin's (and all at NW Pediatrics) care, is so incredibly moving. God is SO good. How are the girls now? Still the same. We missed the stage that is most effective to treat. Their scary and intense coughing could last up to 6 weeks, then another month or more of slowly fading out. We are VERY tired. Sadly, this leaves Lacy most likely missing the traditional first day of kindergarten milestone with her class. Lacy and the girls will no longer be contagious by tomorrow(5 days of antibiotics), but FAR from well. Last thing we need is for her to relapse, develop pneumonia, or any other complication from running her down while her immune system is low.

But...God has been so faithful and so gracious. We know he will cover these needs just as he clearly did through this ordeal. We fully trust Him now and will continue to do so.

We knew something was NOT right.

In my arms after almost calling 911

Another doctor visit to administer pertussis test and pop a million ribs back into place:(

A rough night of struggling to breath, coughing, and puking for this sweet girl

She dropped back into her pillows like this after an intense episode

Downstairs so mommy could keep watch and prep for Lacy's birthday

Both girls now DOWN

I slept in the girls room so Eddy could have a good night sleep before his day of travel for work

Need I say anything here?

I should note the TINY space for mom and me. Propping the girls up with 2 pillows, plus Ashley the sleeping tasmanian devil, leave LITTLE room.

Attempting to lessen symptoms(it was unsuccessful)

Daytime brings relief when symptoms are slight to gone. Each night it returns. Please keep our girls, the adults caring for them, and the doctors in your prayers if the Lord impresses on your heart. We are not out of the woods yet....but we will be! In the meantime, please pray for safety, endurance, medical coverage, and acceptance of altered plans(that being kindergarten)

In Him we trust.

First Baptist Church Vacation Bible School!

What a fun and MEANINGFUL week we had at VBS this year! I helped lead music with a dear friend and both girls got to attend:) It was for K-5th grade, but newly 3yr old Ashley was allowed to tag along with the kindergarteners. She did great!(thanks to some top-notch 'coaches') I also had the best job and was a fly on the wall, floating around capturing all that I could to put together a highlight video. Our church posted the video and take a peek into what went down over our week of VBS!

REALLY? My baby is THREE?! This fun morning/day was really touch and go due to some health problems for me(not to mention the scramble to get Lolo taken care of for the day) We knew what ever the result was His will and that was exactly where we wanted to be. Close to 5pm, THE DAY BEFORE, we got the green light from all the docs to go ahead with our big Portland adventure for Ashley's birthday. I felt SO thankful for both my health and for a special day to celebrate our little munchkin. I just wanted to holler, "Good morning! It's a brand new day! You give me strength, You give me just what I need and I can feel the hope that's rising in me. It's a good morning" But, I'll let Mandisa do that part. We were thrilled to take along our two sweet friends Grace and Faith, who were such a JOY and help to have along. What a blessing to have two older girls with such a heart for the Lord to love on our little girls and who are always longing to serve Eddy and I(thanks for making the sign girls!!) Blessing! Well, I will let the video finish the rest of the story!

Every good and perfect gift...

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17
The day after Lacy took 2nd in Horizon's Talent Show, we had a big surprise coming and man was a KILLER keeping it a secret. I was SO excited and couldn't hide it and pretty much drove all my friends on FB crazy because I kept talking about how excited I was without sharing what it was about. The only reason I didn't is because I kind of have this thing about surprises....THEY MUST BE A SURPRISE. No hints, and absolutely NO spoiling! :) So, I only told a few people that I was pretty sure would not accidentally spill the beans to the girls.'s a long one. I had to treasure the memory instead of it being a short and simple entertaining video. Too much I want to cherish and remember always. Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy! Or watch it for 23 seconds and at least see what all the fuss was about;) We thank you Lord for these beautiful memories and to everyone who helped make this an unforgettable day!!

WHERE to begin?!
Should I start when I was pregnant with Lacy, cradling her in my belly, singing to her in hopes the Lord would bless me with a little girl who would share the gift of music? Well...Let me just start here:

Lacy sang in her school's talent show(Horizon Christian School, pre-K through 12th grade). I really apologize for signaling to raise the track is a little hard to hear her, diminishes her powerful voice, and that is totally mommy's fault. The fact that Lacy's voice only cracked once and that she got through this song was completely the Lord's doing!! She was NOT well the morning of the show. We spent a lot of time in prayer that day before the show.

Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:31

*If you would like to hear Lacy sing when not affected by a cold and the track is at an appropriate level, check out her audition video here:

*Wednesday were we totally surprised when Grandma and Grandpa showed up FROM MONTANA to see the show!!! Seriously, mommy almost died from the surprise...maybe more like almost fainted, but STILL! Super surprised. What a blessing to have family that dedicated and loving! (on BOTH sides!!!)

*Lacy came down with a nasty cold couple days before the show and the morning of the show not only did she have a completely stuffy nose, but her voice began to go

*Lacy had BOTH sets of grandparents and her Uncle Cory, along with many friends and teachers in attendance!

*This was Lacy's first solo and she has not received any vocal training, except some uneducated tips from mommy;) She did sing a couple lines of a song mommy sang a year ago, but this is her first official performance! Totally an unforgettable experience.

*Lacy had no clue there were prizes or places awarded, she was just sharing her abilities as the Lord asks us to.

Thank you to Grandpa for sharing his photos, to Uncle Cory for taking video #2, and all the family and friends who came to love and support that night and every day of our lives. Each and everyone of you is a blessing we do not take for granted.

Enjoy the video.
